The Scavo technique was introduced in the early 1950's by glass artisans on the island of Murano, Italy. They developed the technique to obtain an archeological effect on glass typical of objects found buried underground for centuries. A mixture of several powders, the content of which is a highly guarded secret, is fused on the surface of the glass at a temperature of 800 degrees Celsius to achieve the crusty, aged appearance. The size of our Scroll Luminaire is unusually large and thick for a piece of Scavo glass. A separate clear glass candle base is included.
