Masons in Medieval England were responsible for building some of England's most famous buildings. The medieval mason was a highly skilled lay craftsman who combined the roles of architect, builder, craftsman, designer and engineer. Using only a set of compasses, a set square and a staff or rope marked off in halves, thirds and fifths, the mason was able to construct some of the most amazing and famous cathedrals and castles ever built. Stone Masons earned their position in the guild through years of apprenticeship and were the craftsmen who physically formed the huge blocks of stone on the construction site.
